Canadian Geographic

I'm a big fan of Canadian Geographic and its mission to represent Canadian geography to Canadians and others abroad. Our country is so immense that it is very important for us to feel connected across Canada's widespread regions of distinct history and unusually rich geography. Therefore, I always participate in their on-line contests and this year I'm delighted to have received the following honours:

September  Finalist for Wildlife Photography Contest 2014

October  Honourable Mention (3rd place) for 29th Annual Canadian Geographic Photography Contest — Landscape Category.

You can view this image, Here Comes the Sun (The Battery, St. John's, Newfoundland) at Canadian Geographic and make comments!

Atlas of Canada

Also from Canadian Geographic, I'm delighted and honoured to have fourteen of my Canadian landscape photographs published in the new Atlas of Canada including three full-page layouts. Several notable Canadians write about Canada, its natural history and a new form of photography, involving the blend of photographs with satellite images of major cities, created specifically for this Atlas.

The Atlas of Canada is being sold at Costco, Chapters and on-line.

Professional Photographers of Canada

For the second consecutive year I am thrilled and honoured to receive the Best in Class award for Pictorial/Floral and the overall award for Photographic Artist of the Year for the Alberta Chapter of the PPOC! This is the annual PPOC provincial association competition and I will be entering the National Competition in April 2015, held at Niagara on the Lake, Ontario.

2014 World Photographic Cup

This image of The Battery, along the entrance to St. John's harbour in Newfoundland, received the highest competition score of excellence this past April, at the national PPOC print competition in Winnipeg. This picture also received a Judge's Choice Ribbon and is selected as one of three landscape pictures to represent Canada at the World Photographic Cup competition. This is a competition comprised of award-winning images from professional associations around the the world, and judged by an international panel of professional photographers. The winners will be announced at the end of this year and a ceremony will be held in France in April 2015. I will keep you posted of the outcome in the next update!

Maple Leaf Adventures

This past spring I was very fortunate to have had the opportunity to experience the Great Bear Rainforest landscape along the central BC coastline with Maple Leaf Adventures. Recently Captain Smith, the owner of the company, informed me that my photograph of three Grizzly bear cubs was chosen to adorn the cover of their mail-out brochure for next season. That is just icing on the cake for one of the most memorable travel experiences I have yet to experience! We travelled far from towns and people into the Canadian wilderness for 10 nights. At one point someone on the trip lamented the upcoming end to this journey with a reference to "getting back to reality". Captain Smith quietly stated something that I took to heart when he replied, "THIS ... is reality"! How true. It is easy to forget about nature and the wilderness in our largely urbanized existence.
